Why does Emily In Paris makes social media effortless and the TRUTH?

social media

Okay, we’re late to the trend but we can’t avoid talking about Emily in Paris anymore… With Netflix confirming two more series of the show, we need to know your thoughts. The unrealistic view of marketing has been outspoken by many, with Emily making marketing look effortless with viral after viral campaigns (if only, right?). She gains a crazy amount of likes on posts with only one hashtag . That’s not how it works.

For anyone who hasn’t watched the show, here’s a quick synopsis: Emily Cooper is flown from Chicago to Paris to act as a liaison for a boutique French marketing firm. She routinely undermines her boss, her coworkers, and her clients to pull outrageous (and expensive) social media stunts. Though Emily is a junior executive, she regularly receives enthusiastic and immediate agreement from high-profile clients, with minimal feedback (this is especially delusional). And she does it all without speaking a word of French. There are also complicated romantic plotlines and way too many musical numbers.

Between Emily’s office hours, her uncontrolled spontaneity, and her chaotic client-team-individual hierarchy, marketing experts agree that Emily is actually bad at her job. On top of it all, Emily is not yet 30, and while the marketing industry has no shortage of egos, her audacity is fairly astounding for her age. This all makes for good drama, but in real life, it would likely make for a talk with HR or a swift shove out the door.

After experiencing some of the above, my takeaway from EIP is that I’m relieved to not work in social media amnagement anymore.

You need a Hashtags strategy!

Do you have one?

Our chosen word this year is to SCALE – and it deserves a little social media respect. The year is SCALE as that is what we hope to continue. Growing our roster of clients, and service offerings. While our 2021 financials will be closing soon we didn’t quite achieve a big increase in revenue, but this year we will be smashing that growth with key networking events and choosing who we want to spend our energy on and with. It is about intention

What have you chosen your word to be?

On the other hand, we kinda wanna enjoy this somewhat unrealistic perspective of marketing too with a glass of prosecco in hand.

Are you here for the dreamy, effortless-looking marketing life or do you watch it through gritted teeth?

If Emily Cooper’s adventures in Paris make you feel less-than, remember that fiction is fun, but it’s not always something we should be jealous of. Small wins, even ones that don’t happen at work, are still something to be proud of. You can put your personal growth ahead of your work goals. At the very least, remember that you would have to work REALLY HARD to wear those awful clothes. If you want to binge with me, let’s do it in a smart way.
