Feeling out of balance in your life? The Wheel of Life® is a simple yet transformative tool that can help you identify areas that need attention and create actionable goals to achieve a more fulfilling and harmonious existence.
You wake up with little motivation to face the day ahead. Communication with your family feels strained. And you’ve noticed yourself leaning on unhealthy coping mechanisms just to get through. When life feels misaligned, it’s a sign to seek clarity and direction.
While everyone has made resolutions, set goals or purchased a gym membership, it may not feel like the same for you or down your alley of things to do because you may not know what requires attention or focus.
I discovered the Wheel of Life® back in 2019, and this year, we sat down as a family and shaded our areas of improvement and focus, which led to further discussion about how to approach it, what are some of the tools we can use, and how can we approach it to improve areas of our life.
Tools like the Wheel of Life® can guide you toward balance and fulfillment in moments of dissatisfaction. This self-assessment helps pinpoint the areas of your life that need attention, enabling you to focus on growth and create a roadmap toward holistic well-being. Here’s how you can use the Wheel of Life® to set your life back on track.
What is the Wheel of Life®?
The Wheel of Life® is a visual self-assessment tool that breaks your life into key areas and evaluates your satisfaction within each. It’s often depicted as a circle divided into triangular sections, like the spokes of a wheel or slices of a pie. Each slice represents a different facet of life, such as:
– Relationships
– Career
– Finances
– Health
– Enjoyment/Personal Fulfillment
– Personal Growth/Learning
– Environment
– Spirituality
The exercise involves rating your current satisfaction in each area on a scale of 1–10, where 10 is the highest. You’ll shade in the corresponding level on each slice using a physical worksheet.
Once completed, the shaded areas visually represent where you’re thriving and where you’re falling short. You’ll also have the opportunity to set future satisfaction goals for each area, giving you a clearer vision of where to focus your energy and effort.
Why Use the Wheel of Life®?
When life feels overwhelming or unfulfilling, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters. The Wheel of Life® serves as a grounding exercise, offering:

2. Focus: By recognizing the areas that need attention, you can prioritize where to direct your energy.
3. Motivation: Setting realistic goals for improvement inspires actionable steps toward a better life.
4. Holistic Perspective: This tool encourages you to consider all aspects of your life, promoting a well-rounded approach to self-improvement.
Real-Life Applications of the Wheel of Life®
1. Balancing Work and Family Life
If you’re excelling in your career but struggling with family relationships, the Wheel of Life® may reveal this imbalance. Setting goals like “leave work by 6 PM” or “schedule a monthly family outing” can help restore harmony.
2. Navigating Major Life Transitions
Whether you’re changing careers, moving to a new city, or entering a new stage of life, the Wheel of Life® can provide clarity. Use it to evaluate how the transition impacts your overall satisfaction and focus on areas needing extra support.
3. Fostering Personal Growth
Low satisfaction in personal growth might inspire you to explore new hobbies, attend workshops, or practice mindfulness. These steps not only boost self-development but also enrich other areas of life.
How to Use the Wheel of Life®
1. Complete the Assessment
Take a moment to reflect on each area of the wheel. Rate your current satisfaction on a scale of 1–10 and shade in the corresponding level. Be honest with yourself—this is a judgment-free zone designed to bring awareness.
2. Identify the Gaps
Examine your Wheel of Life®. Are there slices that are significantly smaller than others? These gaps highlight the areas of your life that may be neglected or need attention.
3. Set Future Goals
Now, determine where you’d like to be in each area. What would a 10/10 look like for your relationships, career, health, or personal growth? Write these goals down.
4. **Reflect and Prioritize**
Which areas need immediate attention? For instance, if your health and finances are rated low, you might prioritize scheduling regular workouts or creating a budget. Focus on manageable steps that create momentum.
5. Create an Action Plan
Break your goals into actionable steps. For example:
– If you want to improve relationships, set a goal to schedule weekly family dinners or have meaningful one-on-one conversations.
– For personal growth, commit to reading a book, taking a class, or journaling regularly.
6. Review and Reassess
Life is ever-changing. Revisit your Wheel of Life® periodically to assess your progress and recalibrate your goals. This ensures you stay aligned with your evolving priorities.
